SAPEC volleyball
The annual St. Albert Physical Education Council junior high volleyball tournament, sponsored by Active Physio Works, swings into action at 2 p.m. Friday with pool play for 16 girls and 16 boys teams.
The tournament consists of 102 best-of-three matches at Vincent J. Maloney and the SkyDome for the girls, and the boys are split between Sir George Simpson, ESSMY and Alexandre-Tache.
Saturday’s round of 16 playoffs begin at 9 a.m. and the A-bracket finals are 3:15 p.m. at VJM for the girls and Alexandre-Tache for the boys.
The SAPEC and area teams in the tournament are the Alexandre-Tache Scorpions, Camilla Thunderbirds, William D. Cuts Crusaders, Elmer S. Gish Warriors, ESSMY Leopards, Lorne Akins Gators, Morinville Wolves, Richard S. Fowler Falcons, Sir George Simpson Voyageurs, Sturgeon Heights Eagles and Vincent J. Maloney Marauders.
Last year’s winners were the R.F. Staples Thunderbirds of Westlock over Lorne Akins for the boys and Fowler over Lorne Akins for the girls.
Meanwhile, the SAPEC regular season started Tuesday and league play continues Thursday.
Last year's Tier I city champions were Lorne Akins for the boys and Simpson’s three-peat for the girls.
Metro volleyball
The Paul Kane Blues and St. Albert Skyhawks host volleyball doubleheaders today in the metro Edmonton league.
Match times at Paul Kane are 5 p.m. for the division one men against the Edmonton Christian Lions and 6:30 p.m. for the division one women against the Jasper Place Rebels.
At the SkyDome, the division two men play the O’Leary Spartans at 5 p.m. and the division one women line up against the St. Peter the Apostle Spartans of Spruce Grove at 6:30 p.m.
Raiders games
The St. Albert Nektar Raiders close out their exhibition schedule with a pair of road games before the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League starts next weekend.
Faceoff times are 6:30 p.m. tonight against the Sherwood Park Kings and 5:45 p.m. Saturday against the Red Deer Chiefs.
The Raiders are 1-4-1 in the preseason after Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Oil Kings in Leduc.
The Raiders had three netminders, seven defencemen and 17 forwards in camp available for the game, plus another forward was still at juniors.
League play for the 2019 provincial finalists kicks off Oct. 5 against the KC Pats at 6:15 p.m. at Castledowns Arena and Oct. 6 against the Southside Athletic Club a 2:30 p.m. at Jarome Iginla Arena.
