The St. Albert Rugby Football Club is hosting a doubleheader today at the Leading Edge Physiotherapy Field.

The rucking and mauling starts at 2 p.m. between the St. Albert Exiles (3-2) and the first-place Edson Axemen (4-1) in the Edmonton Rugby Union men’s third division.

At 3:30 p.m., the red-hot St. Albert men’s first division team tackles the Calgary Saracens (1-3). In the Alberta Cup standings the 2008 pennant winners and provincial finalists are undefeated in five matches while averaging a league-high 38 points per win. The firsts are coming off a 39-15 pounding of the winless Lep/Tigers.

The firsts close out the month against the Calgary Hornets (2-2) next Saturday at St. Albert and the Druids (1-3) June 27 at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

As for the surprising Exiles, they have done better than expected as the second of two St. Albert third division teams. The roster of Exiles is made up of players in their late teens to early 50s. Their third straight win after two losses was 20-7 over the LA Crude (1-4) last week in St. Albert.

The other St. Albert third division side visited the Pirates (1-3) Friday. The score was unavailable at press time. Last week the thirds (3-2), the 2008 ERU playoff finalists, dropped a disappointing 29-5 decision to the Axemen in Edson.

Meanwhile the Fort McMurray Knights (1-3) have forfeited today’s game against the host St. Albert Reds (1-3) in the ERU women’s second division. The Reds, a developmental women’s squad, have been outscored 151 to 15 in their last three losses. The Blues, the top St. Albert team in the women’s second division, are undefeated in four games. Last month they humiliated the Knights 103-0 in St. Albert.

The final registration tally for the 18th annual St. Albert Kids of Steel Triathlon is 341 males and females for Sunday’s competition at Fountain Park Recreation Centre. The total includes 266 individual entries and 25 teams in the elementary and junior/senior high school categories. The action gets under way at 8 a.m.

Among the St. Albert entries are twin brothers Thomas and Mark Brown and Ariel Raudsepp. The Browns are gearing up for the World Sprint Triathlon Championships in Australia in September. Thomas and Raudsepp were also winners at the Junior Provincial Championships in Edmonton last week. All three will be competing in the 16 to 19 age group. The Gators Triathlon Club members are also entered in the National Sprint Triathlon Championships in Kelowna, Aug. 22.

Kids of Steel triathlons provides kids and young adults from ages six to 19 an opportunity to participate in the sport in a positive environment. Emphasis is on fun and safety. The St. Albert swim-bike-run course varies in distance according to age group.

The 12th annual Fastball St. Albert Invitational Tournament is under way at the Meadowview and Mission diamonds.

Twenty-nine teams from across Alberta and Saskatchewan are competing for medals in the A level squirt, peewee and bantam event. More than 350 males and females from ages 11 to 16 are participating. Fastball St. Albert is represented by the bantam Angels, peewee Angels and two squirt Angels teams.

Sunday’s medal finals at Meadowview are scheduled for 9 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.
