Fowler Classic: The annual Fowler Classic basketball tournament tips off Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Richard S. Fowler and Ecole Secondaire Saint Marguerite d'Youville schools. Tri-Prov hoops: The Titans Tri-Prov junior high basketball tournament starts Friday afternoon for the Lorne Akins Gators at Harry Ainlay High School. Senior AA Kings: The puck drops Saturday night for the Morinville Kings in the North Central Hockey League playoffs.

The annual Fowler Classic basketball tournament tips off Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Richard S. Fowler and Ecole Secondaire Saint Marguerite d'Youville schools.

The B finals start Saturday at noon for the girls at Fowler and the boys at ESSMY and the A finals are 1:30 p.m. for the girls and 3 p.m. for the boys at Fowler.

The ESSMY Leopards, Sir George Simpson Voyageurs, Vincent J. Maloney Marauders and the host Fowler Falcons are representing the SAPEC junior high league.

Last weekend at the Power of 3 Tournament in Spruce Grove, Fowler beat Greystone 63-56 in the boys' final and Maloney edged the Lorne Akins Gators 33-32 in the girls' final.

The tournament MVPs were Tylar Dobish from Fowler and Abby Morrison from Maloney.

Fowler is 13-0 this season as winners of the recent Boston Pizza SAPEC Invitational.

The Titans Tri-Prov junior high basketball tournament starts Friday afternoon for the Lorne Akins Gators at Harry Ainlay High School.

The lady Gators play Avalon at 3 p.m. and the boys battle DS Mackenzie at 4:45 p.m.

The third-place games are 11 a.m. Saturday for the boys and 5 p.m. for the girls and the finals are 1 p.m. for the boys and 7 p.m. for the girls.

The puck drops Saturday night for the Morinville Kings in the North Central Hockey League playoffs.

Game time is 7:45 p.m. against the Slave Lake Winterhawks at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

Game two in the best-of-five series is Feb. 6 at 8:30 p.m. at Slave Lake and game three is Feb. 7 at 5:45 p.m. at Morinville.

If needed, game four is Feb. 13 at 8:30 p.m. at Slave Lake and game five is Feb. 14 at 8:45 p.m. at Morinville.

In league play, the Kings (13-4-1) finished second and the Winterhawks (4-14) were last in the seven-team standings.

The Kings swept the season series by scores of 6-3, 12-1 and 4-3.

The Westlock Warriors (16-1-1) received a first-round bye.

Last year, the Kings placed second at 13-4-1 in their inaugural NCHL season and in the best-of-three opening round lost two straight to Westlock.

The Kings also hosted the senior AA/A provincials and won the A final.

The NCHL playoff winner advances to provincials at Daysland.

The Devon Barons (10-7-1) are the two-time defending NCHL champions.
