St. Albert prop Andy Tiedemann will start for Canada in today’s test match against Wales in Toronto.

Tiedemann, 20, was listed as a substitute player in Canada’s 25-6 loss to Ireland last Saturday at UBC Thunderbird Stadium and didn’t see the field.

The top forward with the University of Victoria Vikes made his national team debut in 2005 with a U17 touring side against county and club teams in England. The next year he scrummed down with the Canada Youth 19 team during a four-match series on Vancouver Island.

The rematch of the 2008 tier I playoff final between the Pink Panthers and the Morinville Ladies in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League gets under way Sunday at 5 p.m. at Eldorado field.

Last year the Panthers upset Morinville 2-1 for their first league championship crown in team history.

In division one action Morinville booted the Alleycats 6-1 and the Panthers were on the losing end of scores of 5-1 to Revolution FC and 1-0 to Mavericks 09.

The undefeated St. Albert Impact division 2A men’s team has matches scheduled on consecutive days next week in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Impact is coming of its third straight win, 2-1 over DFCA (two losses, one tie) in St. Albert.

Offensively the team is spearheaded by Cohen Cassidy and Scott DeJong. Cassidy, the top scorer last year with the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League division one champion Chester City with 15 goals, leads all division 2A players with four. DeJong is second in goals with three. Last year DeJong sniped a team-high eight goals for the premier Impact squad.

The St. Albert lady Skyhawks are hosting a celebrity basketball game, silent auction and barbecue June 12 at the SkyDome as a fundraiser for their trip to Cuba in December. Tickets are $5 at the door. The silent auction starts at 7 p.m. and the game between the celebrities and Skyhawks tips off at 8 p.m.

In Cuba the Skyhawks will play and train with young athletes identified as potential candidates of the Cuba national basketball program. They are also collecting uniforms, shoes and equipment to give to Cuban youths.

If interested in donating items to the silent auction, email coach John Dedrick at [email protected].
