The Cardinals take on the Stony Plain Mets at 7 p.m in Stony Plain tonight in North Central Alberta Baseball League action. The Cardinals are off to a strong start with wins over Bon Accord and Sturgeon Paladins. Last year's Cardinals were one win short of advancing to the NCABL playoffs after losing the wildcard elimination game 4-1 to the Westlock Lions. The Cardinals are also in action on Sunday, set for a game against the Edmonton Primeaus.

High school rugby playoffs

It's playoff time in metro Edmonton division two men’s high school rugby. The Bellerose Bulldogs play the St. Francis Xavier Rams (0-3, 68 PF/126 PA) at St. Albert Rugby Football Club today at 4:45, while the Sturgeon Spirits will take on the Jasper Place Rebels at 4:45 p.m. at Pirates Rugby Club. The Spirits are the defending champions.

Thursday the Paul Kane Blues battle the J. Percy Page Panthers at Ellerslie Rugby Park at 4:45.

Semifinals are scheduled for May 29. The final will take place May 31 at 6:15 p.m. at Ellerslie.

Premier rugby

The SARFC women will begin their 2018 campaign in the Alberta Women's Premier division at home when they host the Calgary Irish at 2 p.m. at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club on Saturday. The Irish have already played two games this season with a 1-1 record, winning their season opener against the Nor'Westers but falling to Calgary Hornets RFC last Wednesday.

The SARFC men's team also begins their season in the Alberta Cup premier men's division when they take on the Clan at 2:15 p.m at Ellerslie. The Clansmen are 0-1 this season after a loss to Leprechaun Tigers RFC on May 12.

Track and field

St. Albert Challenge track and field meet hosted by the St. Albert Mustangs is set for this weekend at Fowler Athletic Park. Athletes from all over the province will travel to St. Albert to compete in the event. The event kicks off Friday with long jump and hammer throw events and  wraps up on Sunday afternoon.

St. Albert Stars

St. Albert Stars kick off their 2018 Alberta Football League season on Saturday against the Fort McMurray Monarchs. Last season the Monarchs beat the Stars 54-14. St. Albert finished with a record of 5-3 in the regular season last year, fourth in the AFL. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Clarke Park in Edmonton.
