The winners of the last eight Labatt's Cups in premier men's rugby go toe-to-toe today at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
Kickoff is 4 p.m. between SARFC and the Calgary Hornets.
The third consecutive provincial championship and the fourth since 2010 for SARFC was last year's 25-20 thriller over the Hornets in Calgary. The Hornets were undefeated entering the fifth provincial showdown between the premier standouts since 2009.
Last weekend the Hornets (9-0) defeated the Nor'Westers 33-27 in Calgary and SARFC (5-3) extended its winning streak to three games in the 69-5 drubbing of the visiting Calgary Rams (3-6).
SARFC is fourth in the premier table as the second-ranked north team behind the Nor'Westers (8-1).
SARFC lost both games to the Nor'Westers in the premier fixtures by scores of 57-26 and 51-3.
The Baseball Alberta peewee AA Tier IV championship is underway at Legion Memorial Park.
The host St. Albert Cardinals Blue play the High Prairie Chiefs today at 3 p.m. and the Stettler Stormhold at noon Sunday.
Friday's scores against the Edmonton Angels and Castor Raiders were unavailable at press time
If there are no tiebreakers, the final is 3 p.m. Sunday.
Last weekend the peewee A Cardinals placed second at the Tier II provincials in St. Albert with two wins and three losses.
The final was 15-5 for the Olds Spitfires against the Cardinals.
Next weekend the peewee AAA Tier I provincials start 9 a.m. Friday in St. Albert.
The winner of the five-team tournament advances to the U13 Baseball Canada championship, Aug. 24 to 27 at Repentigny, Quebec and the second and third place teams qualify for westerns, Aug. 17 to 21 at Spruce Grove.
The Cardinals are 23-11 overall and in the peewee AAA standings the Red Birds are fifth at 19-9.
The top four teams are the Okotoks Dawgs (23-6), Camrose Cougars (21-8), Red Deer Braves (20-11) and Sherwood Park Athletics (20-8).
The St. Albert Stars huddle up today in the last Alberta Football League game before the playoffs.
Kickoff is 4 p.m. against the Central Alberta Buccaneers at Riel Recreation Park.
The Stars and Bucs are tied for third place with 5-2 records.
The playoffs start Aug. 12.
Last year the Stars finished 6-5 overall after losing 43-23 to the Bucs in the semifinals.
