Backer, a St. Albert resident curling out of the Granite, defeated Forbes of St. Albert 7-6 in the final of the 20-team draw.

The 2015 bonspiel also featured 20 teams, compared to 24 teams the previous two years.

The St. Albert Soccer Association is expecting more than 2,000 players, coaches and spectators to attend the Ombrelle Active Start Soccer Festival this weekend at Servus Credit Union Place.

The season windup for the U4, U5, U6, U8 and U12 SASA indoor teams goes today from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and the U10 windup is Sunday from noon to 6:30 p.m. Games and activities are scheduled both days.

The St. Albert Flyers have two games remaining at Akinsdale Arena before the Sutter North Cup provincial qualifier in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The midget 15 Flyers (31-3-1, 191 GF/51 GA) host the Maple Leafs (5-25-5) at 5 p.m. Sunday and the south division CBHA Rangers (18-11-4) March 5 at 10:45 a.m. to complete the league schedule.

The Flyers are ranked first in the north division and the CBHA Blackhawks (25-5-5, 158 GF/81 GA) are the south leaders.

The Sutter North Cup tournament, March 9 to 12 at the Terwillegar and Callingwood arenas, consists of the top eight north teams and the two finalists advance to the March 22 to 26 provincials in Grande Prairie.

The second win in a row for the Flyers after losing back-to-back games was 2-1 over the Sherwood Park Squires (24-7-4) last weekend.

Erik Boers and Tanner Fincaryk scored and Evan Fradette (15-1) faced 22 shots in Sherwood Park.

Fradette leads all AMMHL netminders with a 1.13 GAA, .949 save percentage and six shutouts.

The midget AAA St. Albert Slash skate on home ice this weekend in the Alberta Female Hockey League.

Game times are 2:15 p.m. today against the Rocky Mountain Raiders (15-7-3) and 1:30 p.m. Sunday against the Calgary Fire (11-15-1) at Go Auto Arena.

The first-place Slash (21-2-1, 88 GF/34 GA) and second-place Raiders played Friday in Airdrie but the score was unavailable at press time.
