The Raiders are 3-1 in exhibition play after Saturday’s 5-2 win over the Grande Prairie Storm.

The Raiders’ training camp roster consisted of 26 players going into the game.

The Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League opener is Oct. 3 against the Southside at 5:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena and the Raiders skate at home Oct. 4 against the Canadian Athletic Club at 1:15 p.m.

The St. Albert Physical Education Council hosts its annual district cross-country championships and junior high volleyball tournament this week.

Thursday’s cross-country meet at Kingswood Park features the junior high finals at 10 a.m., followed by the elementary red and blue groups at noon and 1:15 p.m., respectively.

The volleyball tournament, sponsored by St. Albert Active Physio Works, swings into action at 2 p.m. Friday at Paul Kane High School and Lorne Akins School for the boys and the SkyDome and Vincent J. Maloney School for the girls.

Saturday the tournament resumes at 9 a.m. and the finals are 3:15 p.m. at Paul Kane for the boys and the SkyDome for the girls.

The draw features 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams divided into four round-robin pools to determine the playoff pairings. A total of 102 best-of-three matches are scheduled.

Last year the Lorne Akins Gators beat the Riverbend Centurions in the boys’ final and Riverbend defeated the Camilla Thunderbirds in the girls’ final.

Meanwhile, league play for SAPEC teams starts Tuesday. The defending Tier 1 city champions are the Sir George Simpson Lady Voyageurs (third SAPEC banner in five years and the 12th in school history) and Lorne Akins Gators (SAPEC-high 15th banner was the second in a row for the boys and the third since 2010).

The Tier 1 finals are Nov. 19 at Bellerose Composite High School.

Thursday the St. Albert Sabres entertain the Canadian Athletic Club in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.

Faceoff is 7 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The season opener was Tuesday against the visiting SSAC Southgate Lions but the score was unavailable at press time.

Sunday the Sabres are in Sherwood Park to play the Flyers at 6:30 p.m.
