Two provincial berths are up for grabs today as the St. Albert Skyhawks host the 3A Edmonton zone women's volleyball tournament playoffs at the SkyDome.
The semifinal winners in the best-of-three matches at 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. will represent the metro Edmonton league at the provincials starting Thursday in Cochrane.
The 3 p.m. final determines the first and second zone seeds at provincials.
Last year at provincials the Skyhawks were awarded silver medals.
Friday the Skyhawks hosted the Strathcona Christian Eagles, St. Peter the Apostle Spartans and Edmonton Christian Lions in pool A and Sturgeon Composite High School was the venue for pool B matches involving the Ardrossan Bisons, Leduc Tigers, Louis St. Laurent Barons and the host Spirits. Scores were unavailable at press time.
The top three teams in both pools qualified for today's playoffs starting at 10 a.m. and the first-place teams received byes into the semifinals.
The Skyhawks (7-5 in division one) and Spirits (8-2 in division two) are ranked first and second, respectively, in the tournament.
Meanwhile in the 3A men's tournament the Skyhawks are ranked fifth and the Spirits are eighth.
In pool play Friday the Skyhawks (5-4 in division two) spiked the ball at Edmonton Christian High School and the Spirits (4-5 in division two) competed at Louis St. Laurent High School.
Today at Edmonton Christian the semifinals are 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. and the final is 3 p.m.
The men's provincials start Thursday in Fort McMurray.
St. Albert residents Megan Lauer and Rob Lockwood are representing the Farm Strong Athletics Club at the Alberta Senior Provincial Championships for Olympic weightlifting today at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
Lauer, a forward with the 2014 St. Albert second division provincial women's rugby team, is lifting between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and Lockwood is competing between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
The next game for the St. Albert Merchants in the Capital Junior B Hockey League is Sunday against the Edmonton Mustangs.
Puck drop is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Merchants (12-4) and Mustangs (11-4-1) are battling for the west division pennant.
The Money Men are undefeated in six games on home ice.
The 2014 Founders Cup finalists and fourth-place finishers at provincials are led by Casey Reid's team-leading 11 goals and 29 points and Blair Macuch is the top playmaker with 23 assists.
