The Paul Kane Blues can punch their ticket to the Tier II provincial playoffs with a victory today in the Miles division two final in metro Edmonton high school football.
Kickoff is 11:30 a.m. between the Blues (7-0) and McNally Tigers (6-2) at Foote Field and admission is $5.
The winner will line up against the St. Joseph’s Celtics of Grande Prairie in the Tier II north semifinal next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Foote Field.
In league play the Blues were penalized 16 times in their 41-24 victory against McNally.
In the semifinals the Blues pitched their fourth shutout of the year, 53-0 against the Ardrossan Bisons, and McNally knocked off the second-place O’Leary Spartans (5-2) 39-27.
The Blues are gunning for their second-straight Miles’ championship in the four-year history of Paul Kane football.
The last Miles’ team to win repeat was Ardrossan in 2010-11.
Last year the Blues finished 10-1 overall after losing the Tier II north final 32-0 to the Austin O’Brien Crusaders, the three-time defending Alberta Bowl champions.
In the Tier II (750 to 1,249 students) rankings the Celtics (10-0) of the Mighty Peace league are first, the Blues are second and McNally is unranked.
The St. Albert Merchants host their 15th annual Gord Hollett Memorial Alumni Game today at 2:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Proceeds from the game will go towards the Merchants’ student bursary fund set up in Hollett’s memory.
Hollett was a founding director of the Merchants and the head coach of the junior B team for eight seasons.
The Merchants also have a pub night and silent auction scheduled for Nov. 15 at The Bourbon Room.
The St. Albert Minor Football Association will be represented by three teams in the Capital District league finals Sunday.
At 10 a.m. the Buccaneers (7-1) battle the Sherwood Park Broncos (8-0) for the atom Tier 3 championship at Fuhr Sports Park.
The Bucs lost 6-0 to the Broncos in September.
The Fury (8-0) and Wetaskiwin Warriors (6-2) also huddle up at 10 a.m. in the bantam Tier 3 championship at Johnny Bright Park.
The Fury beat the Warriors 32-26 in the season opener.
At 4 p.m. the Riders (5-3) and Sherwood Park Raiders (3-5) hook up in the peewee Tier 2 championship at Millwoods Turf Field.
The Riders defeated the Raiders 13-8 in September.
Playoff admission is $5.
