The 20th annual Lions Western Canadian Challenge high school volleyball tournament swings into action Thursday at 1 p.m. in Morinville and St. Albert.
The Morinville Wolves, the tournament hosts, and St. Albert Skyhawks are among 24 men's and 24 women's teams in the 198-match competition.
The only out-of-province team is Piyesiw Awasis School of Turtleford, Sask.
The WCC venues are the Morinville Community and St. Albert Catholic high schools, Vincent J. Maloney and Richard S. Fowler junior highs in St. Albert and the Georges H. Primeau and Notre Dame schools in Morinville.
The top two finishers in the four men's and four women's pools advance to the round of 16. The winners qualify for the quarter-finals and the losers move into the consolation bracket.
The remaining four teams in all the pools compete for spots in the round of 16 and the consolation side.
Saturday's playoffs start at 8 a.m.
In the medal round St. Albert Catholic hosts the women's semifinals at 5:30 p.m., the third-place match at 7 p.m. and the final at 8 p.m.
Morinville high school is the site for the men's semifinals at 5:30 p.m., the third-place match at 7 p.m. and the final at 8 p.m.
The consolation finals are 7 p.m. at VJM for the women and Georges H. Primeau for the men.
The Barrhead Gryphons and the Beaverlodge Lady Royals are the defending WCC champions.

The WCC, Panther Invitational at Spruce Grove, Super Mega Volleyball at Maidstone, Sask. and the Big Spike at Shaftesbury High School in Winnipeg are the largest high school volleyball tournaments in Canada with 48 teams.

The women's opening draw is 1 p.m. and the men play at 4 p.m.
The defending women's champion is the Lauren Jenkyns' rink of the St. Albert Curling Club. Jenkyns, third Kathy Piper, second Laurie Schreiner and lead Cindy Bobowik are one of three northern Alberta qualifiers at provincials. Three rinks from southern Alberta and two rinks from the Peace country are also competing for a berth at nationals, Nov. 24 to 29 in Halifax, N.S.
The Dominions consist of the top men's and women's rinks from their respective club championships.
The Jenkyns' foursome are the 2014 President's Cup playoff champions in St. Albert and winners of the Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions.
