A six-team Filipino basketball tournament tips off today at Vincent J. Maloney School and wraps up Sunday at Servus Credit Union Place.

Six games will be played both days, starting at 10 a.m. today and resuming Sunday at 3 p.m. The final is 8 p.m.

The tournament's objective is to strengthen Filipino brotherhood and solidarity through sports.

Approximately 100 participants will hoop it up and 90 per cent of the players are from St. Albert from a mixed population of newly permanent residents working for the Sturgeon Community Hospital, Youville Home, Citadel Care Centre and Rosedale. Other foreign workers from Tim Hortons, McDonald's and Walmart will also participate. A guest team from Morinville is also entered.

The competing teams include NTMD8 (Youville Home), Tigers Claw (Tim Hortons), Jeof's Zabbitz (McDonald's), Sturgeon Raptors (Sturgeon Community Hospital), Pogi City (mixture of players) and Morinville.

The St. Albert Raiders are back on the ice this weekend in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

Tonight the Raiders (1-1) entertain the Calgary Northstars (2-0) at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena and Sunday they visit the Sherwood Park Kings (0-0-2) at 6:30 p.m.

The St. Albert Flyers host the Leduc Oil Kings in today's season opener in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Faceoff is 3:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The midget 15 Flyers are in Sherwood Park to play the Squires Sunday at 11:30 a.m. It's the first of five games outside St. Albert before the Flyers skate at home on Oct. 26.

The majority of the Flyers played for the 2013/14 bantam AAA St. Albert Sabres.

The Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League celebrates its sixth season with today's lid-lifter between the St. Albert Raiders and Sherwood Park Royals.

Game time is 11:45 a.m. in Sherwood Park.

The 2014 league finalists host the Lloydminster IceCats Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.

The St. Albert Slash have a home game scheduled tonight in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

Puck drop is 7:45 p.m. against the Southeast Tigers (1-6) of Medicine Hat at Go Auto Arena.

Sunday, the Slash travel to Lloydminster to play the Steelers (2-4) at 1:30 p.m.

The Slash (4-4) are tied for fifth place in the 10-team standings.

Megan Lalor and Brooke Tipton share the team lead in points with seven apiece.
