The Capital Junior B Hockey League rivals started league play Friday. The Merchants – 45-11-1 overall last season as the Founders Cup finalists and fourth-place team at provincials – hosted the North Edmonton Red Wings and the Jets visited the Stony Plain Flyers but the scores were unavailable at press time.
The metro Edmonton high school volleyball season swings into action next week with matches in St. Albert scheduled.
The St. Albert Skyhawks entertain the Spruce Grove Panthers Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. in women's division one action at the SkyDome.
Last year the Skyhawks were awarded silver at the 3A provincials after losing the final 22-25, 25-14, 18-20 to the Eagle Butte Talons of Dunmore. It's still uncertain if the Skyhawks were the first women's team from St. Albert Catholic High School to win a medal or ever compete at volleyball provincials.
In division two pool B the Bellerose Bulldogs host the Skyhawks Thursday at 4:45 p.m. in the men's match and the Paul Kane Blues at 6:15 p.m. in the women's match.
The Bulldogs reached their respective division two finals last year. The women's team finished 12-0 as the metro champion and the men's team was 10-2 as the playoff runner-up.
The Bellerose Bulldogs kick off their quest for a third-straight division one junior football championship in the metro Edmonton league next week.
The pool B game against the St. Joseph Saints (2-0) goes Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Johnny Bright Park.
The Bulldogs are 16-0 since losing the 2011 premier semifinal to the Bev Facey Falcons.
The last team to win three junior titles in a row was the 2004-06 premier champion St. Albert Hawks.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are in Whitecourt today for a junior jamboree.
Last week, in a controlled scrimmage, the Bulldogs out-scored Facey three touchdowns to two in Sherwood Park.
