The Alberta Cup north semifinal between the St. Albert premier men’s team and the Nor’Westers kicks off today at 2 p.m. at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
The first 15 of St. Albert finished on top of the premier table at 11-1 and the Nor’Westers are 4-8 as the fourth-highest north team.
In the premier fixtures the firsts beat the Nor’Westers 38-12 and 32-17.
The playoff winner will ruck and maul the Druids (7-5) or Clansmen (4-8) in the Ken Ann Cup north final Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
The north champion advances to the Labatt’s Cup provincial final Oct. 4 at Calgary Rugby Park.
The firsts have competed in five of the last six provincials and were victorious in 2010.
The 11th annual Ryan Burak Invitational Tournament for high school junior volleyball teams wraps up today at Paul Kane.
Round-robin action resumes at 8 a.m. and the playoffs start at 12:30 p.m.
The division finals are 2:45 p.m. for the females and 4 p.m. for the males.
The tournament features eight female and eight male teams from the metro Edmonton league.
The Paul Kane Blues and Sturgeon Spirits are represented in both divisions and the St. Albert Lady Skyhawks are also entered.
The tournament honours the memory of Ryan Burak, a Paul Kane grad who played three years on the senior volleyball team. He was killed by a drunk driver on Jan. 27, 2004 at the age of 20.
The division finals in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League kick off Sunday at 5 p.m. at Forest Park field.
The division one showdown is between Mavericks 09 – 15-0 in SAWSL and 19-0 overall as the Alberta Soccer Association Tier 3 champions – and Morinville Ladies (12-2-1).
The division two final features Gini’s (6-9-2) and St. Albert Blaze (4-10-3).
Sunday, the St. Albert Merchants host the Founders Cup champion Fort Saskatchewan Hawks in the Capital Junior B Hockey League preseason.
Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Last season in the fifth and deciding game in the CJHL final, the Hawks beat the Merchants 4-3 with a third period tie-breaking goal in St. Albert.
The Merchants were 2-1 in the preseason before Friday’s home game against the Edmonton Mustangs. The score was unavailable at press time.
League play starts next weekend for the Merchants, the fourth-place team at the 2014 provincials.
