The Memorial Cup champion Edmonton Oil Kings host their eighth annual pre-season invitational tournament this weekend at Go Auto Arena.
The participating Western Hockey League teams are the Red Deer Rebels, Medicine Hat Tigers, Swift Current Broncos, Saskatoon Blades, Prince George Cougars and Oil Kings.
Today’s exhibition games start at 11:30 a.m. (Red Deer vs. Prince George), 3 p.m. (Medicine Hat vs. Saskatoon) and 7 p.m. (Oil Kings vs. Swift Current).
Sunday’s game times are 11:30 a.m. Prince George vs. Medicine Hat), 3 p.m. (Swift Current vs. Red Deer) and 7 p.m. (Oil Kings vs. Saskatoon).
Fans watching the Oil Kings can have their picture taken with the Memorial and Ed Chynoweth cups.
Tickets are $10 at the door and one ticket grants admission to all three games per day.
A number of St. Albert Minor Hockey Association products are represented on the WHL teams, including netminders’ Landon Bow (Swift Current, born 1995) and Pat Dea (Oil Kings, 1997), defencemen Ty Stanton (Medicine Hat, 1995), Tyler Dea (Saskatoon, 1995), Zack Gonek (Prince George, 1996) and Josh Mahura (Red Deer, 1998) and forward Tyler Mrkonjic (Prince George, 1996).
GSE (Green Street Elite) and SV Spurs (formerly Arsenal) are representing the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League at the Alberta Soccer Association Tier 3 championship this weekend.
Today at 11 a.m. at the Edmonton Croatia Soccer Club, GSE plays the No. 1 Edmonton District Soccer Association team in the draw and the Spurs battle Calgary No. 1.
The nine-team tournament ends Monday with the medal finals at 9:30 a.m. at the ESA Complex.

Last year at Tier 3 provincials GSE was outscored 19-2 in three losses and in 2012 finished 1-3 at the Tier 4 provincials.
Mavericks 09 of the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League play their first match at the Alberta Soccer Association Tier 3 championship today against Calgary No. 2.
Start time is 11 a.m. at Fuhr Sports Park in Spruce Grove.
Sunday the Mavericks grace the ESA Complex pitch against the No. 1 and 2 Edmonton District Soccer Association teams at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Monday’s medal finals in the six-team tournament kick off at noon at the ESA Complex.
