Today’s season opener for the St. Albert Stars is a rematch of the 2013 Alberta Football League final.
Kickoff against the Calgary Gators is 5 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.
Last year the Stars finished their maiden AFL campaign at 6-4 after losing the championship game 41-16 to the undefeated Gators.
In exhibition action last weekend the Stars beat the Central Alberta Buccaneers 26-12 in St. Albert.
The 17th annual Fastball St. Albert Invitational Tournament is underway at the Meadowview and Henry Singer diamonds.
Thirty-nine teams from Alberta and Saskatoon are competing in eight age divisions, from U10 to U18.
The host St. Albert Angels are represented by eight teams.
The 86-game schedule wraps up with Sunday’s finals at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.

The annual Jeremy Richardson Memorial Baggataway Tournament, hosted by the St. Albert Rams Lacrosse Club, is the main event this weekend at Servus Credit Union Place and the Akinsdale and Kinex arenas.
Teams are competing in the mini-tyke, tyke and male and female novice, peewee, bantam and midget divisions.
The 127-game schedule ends with the Sunday afternoon finals.

Sunday’s start time for the 23rd annual St. Albert Kids of Steel Triathlon is 8 a.m. at Fountain Park Recreation Centre.
The final registration total for the age group competition for youths four to 19 years old is 322 individuals and five teams. The largest age group is U7.
The swim-bike-run course varies in distance according to the age groups.
The Kids of Steel race features seven junior elite (16 to 19) and six U23 triathletes.
It’s also the 2014 Alberta Summer Games qualifier for Zone 5 (Black Gold/Yellowhead), Zone 6 (Edmonton) and Zone 8 (Peace Country).
The post-race awards ceremony starts at 1:30 p.m.
First place in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League’s single division is on the line Sunday between Mavericks 09 and the Morinville Ladies.
Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Forest Park field.
The Mavericks (29 GF and two GA with three shutouts) and Morinville (20 GF and six GA) are 4-0 in the 11-team table.
The top five teams in the round-robin format move on to division one and the bottom six teams will compete in division two.
The single division fixtures end July 20.
