Holowaychuk is the first curler to enter the wall of fame since the inaugural 2011 ceremony honouring Hec Gervais, Don McKenzie, Cathy King, Jackie Rae Greening, Scott Pfeifer and Marc Kennedy.

Holowaychuk’s career is wall-of-fame-worthy. The St. Albert resident served as the alternate for the legendary Ferbey Four during their era of provincial, Brier and world championships. In 1989 he skipped a St. Albert men’s rink to victory at the Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions. He has also curled in a long list of provincials and last year was the second for the Wade White rink of St. Albert, the senior (50-plus) Alberta champions and national bronze medallists.

The men’s program at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club is on display today at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

At 12:30 p.m. the second 15 (1-1) scrum down against the Leduc Crude in the Edmonton Rugby Union and at 2 p.m. the first 15 (2-0) ruck and maul the Lep/Tigers in the Alberta Cup fixtures.

The St. Albert Stars kick off the 2014 Alberta Football League campaign in today’s exhibition against the Central Alberta Buccaneers.

Game time is 3 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.

The first league game is June 7 against the Calgary Gators at 5 p.m. in St. Albert or Edmonton.

Last year the Stars lost the AFL final 41-16 to the undefeated Gators to finish their first season at 6-4.

The annual St. Albert Challenge, hosted by the St. Albert Mustangs Track and Field Club, is underway at Fowler Athletic Park.

More than 400 athletes, including 75 Mustangs, are competing for medals.

The meet is also the 2014 Alberta Summer Games trials for Zone 5 (Black Gold/Yellowhead) and Zone 6 (Edmonton).

Tuesday the St. Albert Cardinals are up to bat against the Spruce Grove White Sox in the NorWest Midget AAA Baseball League.

The first pitch is 7 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

The Cardinals are 10-0 and Spruce Grove is 3-3.

Sir George Simpson School hosts its 23rd annual triathlon Wednesday morning.

Last year’s mini-sprint competition featured 215 triathletes and 55 student course safety marshals.
