Between 400 and 600 athletes are expected to compete at the annual St. Albert Challenge this weekend at Fowler Athletic Park.
The host St. Albert Mustangs Track and Field Club will be represented by 75 athletes.
The meet is also the Alberta Summer Games trials for Zone 5 (Black Gold/Yellowhead) and Zone 6 (Edmonton). The summer games are July 24 to 27 in Airdrie.
The volunteer totals include 50 for Saturday and Sunday and 120 overall with set-up and take-down, plus 30 meet officials.
The third annual Dawg Bowl kicks off 5 p.m. Thursday at Riel Recreation Park.
The Team Cardinal versus Team White intersquad football game features players from the junior and senior Bellerose Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, six Bulldogs competed in the second annual ABC Rising Stars Border Bowl last weekend in Lacombe. Ben Bochar, Nick Cowan, Tyler Feltis, Andrew Johnson, Brandon Trelor and Seth Waselenchuk played for the Alberta Rising Stars. The game featured top high school players in Grades 10 and 11 from mainly rural centres against their counterparts from British Columbia.
The St. Albert Stars host the Central Alberta Buccaneers in Saturday’s exhibition in the Alberta Football League.
Kickoff is 3 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.
League play starts June 7, when the Stars tackle the Calgary Gators in a rematch of the 2013 AFL final. Kickoff is 5 p.m. in St. Albert or Edmonton.
Last year the Stars finished their inaugural AFL season at 6-4 after losing the championship game 41-16 to the undefeated Gators.
The Gators went on to lose the 16th annual Canadian Major Football League final to the National Football Conference champion Montreal Transit 50-28 in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec.
Sunday is the deadline to register for the 23rd annual St. Albert Kids of Steel Triathlon on June 8 at Fountain Park Recreation Centre.
Youths between four and 19 years old can participate individually or as a team on a swim-bike-run course that varies in distance according to age group.
The Kids of Steel is also the provincial championships for junior elite (16 to 19) and U23 triathletes. Distances are 750-metre swim, 18.4-km bike (draft legal) and five-km run.
Last year 263 triathletes (138 females and 125 males) and nine teams completed the Kids of Steel.
