A preview of the Labatt’s Cup provincial final will be staged this afternoon at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
The premier men’s match between the SARFC first 15 and the Calgary Hornets kicks off at 4 p.m.
The firsts (9-2-1, 10 bonus points) and Hornets (9-3, 11 BP) are the top two teams in the Alberta Cup table.
The teams have won the last six Labatt’s Cups and last year the firsts staggered the Hornets 39-5 for their second provincial title in five years.
The third consecutive victory over the Hornets after eight straight defeats, including the 2009, 2011 and 2013 Labatt’s Cups, was 24-19 May 30 in Calgary. It was 24-0 at halftime.
The firsts are winners of five in a row with one match remaining after today’s showdown before the playoffs start to determine the north and south reps at the Oct. 3 provincials at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
On-site registration for the second annual St. Albert Shake Down starts today from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Woodlands Skateboard Park.
Beginners, amateurs and advanced BMX and skateboard riders can also sign up on the morning of Sunday’s event, from 7 to 11 a.m. at the skate park. The competition goes at noon.

The last Capital District Minor Football Association jamboree for St. Albert bantam teams kicks off today at Riel Recreation Park.
The 49ers huddle up against the Fort Saskatchewan Lightning at 10:30 a.m., Wetaskiwin Warriors at 11:15 a.m. and Edmonton Seahawks at noon.
The Fury tackles the Stony Plain Bombers at 2 p.m., Sherwood Park Northstars at 2:45 p.m. and Camrose Buffaloes at 3:30 p.m.
The opening playoff round in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League kicks into action next week at Forest Park Field.
Tuesday in division one, Cosmos FC (1-3, 5-5-3 overall) plays the Kickers (0-4, 5-8-1) and in division two it’s the Pink Ladies (1-2-2, 5-5-5) against Mavericks 95 (1-3-1, 4-8-2) and the Devils (2-1-2, 3-9-2) versus Gini’s (0-4-1, 0-13-1). Start times are 6:30 p.m.
The semifinals are Sept. 13. In division one, Mavericks 09 (4-0, 14-0) plays the opening round winner and the Morinville Ladies (3-1, 11-2-1) battle the Lady Titans (2-2, 8-5). In division two the Snipe (4-0-1, 6-7-2) and St. Albert Blaze (3-1-1, 7-6-1) have byes into the semifinals. The final is Sept. 20.
