At the Sochi 2014 Winter Games the Team Canada defenceman played in the gold-medal game against the United States despite a broken right hand and with the Americans leading 2-0 she assisted on Canada’s first goal with 3:26 remaining in regulation time.

Mikkelson finished the dramatic 3-2 overtime victory with 21:44 minutes of ice time.

The assist was the first point in four games at Sochi for the former bantam AAA St. Albert Sabre. The national team member since 2007 sat out the 3-1 semifinal win over Switzerland after suffering the hand injury at practice in a collision with Hayley Wickenheiser.

Mikkelson, 29, was one of 12 returning players in Sochi from the 2-0 win over the Americans in the 2010 gold-medal game in Vancouver.

The 2011 inductee into the City of St. Albert’s Skating Wall of Fame was the first female to play rep hockey in St. Albert with the 1997 atom AA provincial champion TD Lightning.

The second annual Donnie MAC Cup on April 5 at the Akinsdale and Kinex arenas is shooting to surpass last year’s fundraising total of $15,000 in the fight against lung cancer.

The event will feature two simultaneous games and the majority of the 54 players (four goalies, 16 defencemen and 34 forwards) are St. Albert Minor Hockey Association alumni.

The ceremonial puck drop is 2:30 p.m.

The fundraiser honours the memory of Don MacMillan, a St. Albert resident who died of lung cancer on March 19, 2011 at age 61.

Donations can be made to www.lungcancercanada.ca or at MAC Insurance at No. 8, 44 St. Thomas Street in St. Albert and MAC Registries, 14228 Stony Plain Road.

You can also like/join the Facebook pages for MAC Insurance or Sleepingbeagle Studios for more information, or contact Derek MacMillan at 780-458-1441 or [email protected].
