The Alberta Scotties will consist of 12 rinks and the winner advances to the Canadian Scotties, Feb. 18 to 26 at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, Ont.

The last time the Alberta Scotties were staged in St. Albert was 1984 and the winner was Connie Bennet of the North Hill Curling Club of Calgary.

The first rink to qualify for provincials is Val Sweeting through the 2015/16 Canadian Team Ranking System.

Sweeting is a two-time runner-up at the Canadian Scotties and her 2015 lineup of Paul Kane High School teacher Lori Olson-Johns at third, second Dana Ferguson and lead Rachel Brown lost the final to Jennifer Jones of Manitoba.

Sweeting recently won the Grand Slam of Curling tour stop in Cranbrook.

The 31st annual Wood Tournament starts Friday morning at the Terwillegar Community Rec Centre for the St. Albert Mission tween, junior and belle ringette teams.

The U14AA tweens play in the black pool of the 10-team draw against Buffalo Plains Rush at 8:15 a.m. and Central Alberta Sting at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday’s games are 11:30 a.m. against Calgary Blue and 7:15 p.m. against Calgary Red.

The last tournament for the Mission was the Bernadette Price Memorial in Saskatoon and the tweens finished 5-1 after going 4-0 in pool play. They lost 6-2 to Calgary White in the semifinals and edged Calgary Blue 5-4 for third place.

The tweens are 3-1 in league play and 15-3-1 overall.

The U16AA juniors have games in the black pool of the 10-team draw scheduled against the Sting at 7 a.m. and Calgary Impact at 11:15.

Saturday’s start times are 1 p.m. against Zone 2 and 5:45 p.m. against the Regina Stingers.

The Mission’s record in the Saskatoon tournament was 1-2-1 for fifth place.

Overall, the juniors are 9-6-1.

The black pool games for the U19AA belles in the eight-team draw are against the Winnipeg Angels at 9:30 a.m. and the Sting at 4 p.m.

Saturday the Mission plays Calgary at 8:45 a.m.

The belle’s record in Saskatoon was 1-3 in pool play and overall they are 4-7-1.
