Last weekend in the north semifinals, the Skyhawks (4-5) qualified for their fourth north final in six years by defeating the Peace Wapiti Academy Titans (6-6) of Grande Prairie 22-7 and the Raiders (11-0) were victorious 24-16 over the Sylvan Lake Lakers (8-1-1).

The Raiders are No. 2 and the Skyhawks are No. 7 in the final Tier III (450 to 749 students) Football Alberta rankings.

The winner plays the No. 1 Cochrane Cobras (8-0), the two-time defending provincial champions, or the No. 4 Cardston Cougars (6-3) in the Alberta Bowl next Saturday in Calgary.

Last year the Raiders downed the Skyhawks 28-0 in the north final in Lloydminster.

The Raiders, winners of the 2014 Tier IV (449 or less students) Alberta Bowl and three consecutive Wheatland Football League championships, have lost only one game over the past three years, 55-0 against Cochrane in the 2015 Tier III provincial final.

The Skyhawks reached the Miles conference division two semifinals in the metro Edmonton league and lost 26-0 to the Strathcona Lords (5-3), the eventual champions.

The only Tier III team in the Miles is looking to win back-to-back games for the first time this season.

The playoff round in the metro Edmonton 3A senior women’s volleyball zone tournament starts today at 10 a.m. at the SkyDome.

The St. Albert Skyhawks and Oscar Romero Ravens hosted pool play Friday and the top three teams in both pools made the playoffs.

The first-place teams earned byes into the semifinals at 12:15 and 1:15 p.m.

The final is 3:30 p.m. and the winner joins the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles as the zone reps at the Nov. 24 to 26 provincials in Camrose.

Last year the Skyhawks won the 3A provincial championship.

More than 120 competitors of various ages and belt categories are expected to perform at Canadian Westerns Taekwon-Do Championships today at Bellerose Composite High School.

The invitation-only tournament runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is free.

The Canadian Taekwon-Do Alliance and Paladin Taekwon-Do Ltd., a local club, are hosting the Korean martial art discipline event, featuring patterns, sparring, board breaking and self-defence.
