The Ken Ann Cup north final between the St. Albert Rugby Football Club and the Nor’Westers kicks off today at 5 p.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
The premier men’s winner scrums down against the undefeated Calgary Hornets or Calgary Rams in the Labatt’s Cup provincial final next Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Calgary Rugby Park.
SARFC is 10-2 and the Nor’Westers are 8-4 after winning their respective north semifinals last weekend. Scores were 52-19 for SARFC against the Clan (3-9) and 42-10 for the Nor’Westers against the Strathcona Druids (5-6-1).
SARFC and Nor’Westers split their season series with losses on their home pitch. SARFC won the season opener 50-35 and the Nor’Westers prevailed 38-36 with a converted try on the last play of the match after trailing by 12 with about 10 minutes remaining.
Last year SARFC beat the Nor’Westers 28-19 for its third consecutive Ken Ann Cup and seventh in eight-straight appearances in the north final and at provincials repeated for the third Labatt’s Cup since 2010.
The last team to three-peat was the 2011-13 Hornets.
The St. Albert Flyers of the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League wrap up the John Ferguson Memorial Pre-Season Tournament this weekend at Terwillegar Community Rec Centre.
