The season opener for the St. Albert Merchants is Sunday against the Spruce Grove Regals in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Admission is free for the first 50 fans and Mayor Nolan Crouse will perform the ceremonial puck drop.
The pre-game tailgate party starts at 6 p.m. and live music will be performed by Stereo Villain, a trio consisting of singer/lead guitarist Vic Desousa, Mitch Dory on drums and bassist/vocalist Craig Dory, the Merchants’ team manager.
The first 200 fans at the tailgate party will receive free burgers and drinks.
The Merchants will also be accepting food bank donations.
The midget AAA St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders wrap up the pre-season with two games in five days.
The Raiders skate today against the Grande Prairie Storm at 5:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena and Wednesday they host the Sherwood Park Kings at 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Raiders were 2-0 in exhibition action before Friday’s contest against the Southside Athletic Club. The score was unavailable at press time.
League play starts Oct. 1.
The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres close out their bantam AAA exhibition schedule with two games this weekend at Terwillegar Community Rec Centre.
Faceoff times are 11:45 a.m. today against the Lloydminster Heat and noon Sunday against the Sherwood Park Flyers.
The Sabres are 5-0 in the pre-season.
The regular season starts Thursday for the Sabres against the KC Squires at 7 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The St. Albert Flyers make their pre-season debut tonight in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Puck drop is 8 p.m. against the Canadian Athletic Club at Akinsdale Arena.
Next week at Terwillegar Community Rec Centre, the Flyers face-off against SSAC United Cycle at 8 p.m. and Thursday’s game time is 7 p.m. against the Camrose Red Wings.
The St. Albert Women’s Soccer League championships kick off Sunday at 5 p.m. at Forest Park field.
Mavericks 09 (13-0, 70 GF/5 GA) and the Morinville Ladies (7-4-2, 36 GF/22 GA) are competing for division one honours for the third consecutive year. The Mavericks are the two-time defending champions.
The division two final is Cosmos FC (15-0, 106 GF/25 GA) versus the Devils (12-4, 63 GF/38 GA).
