The St. Albert Rugby Football Club hosts two matches this week in the Edmonton Rugby Union.
The first division women battle the Clan (3-1) tonight and the third division men tackle the Parkland Sharks (1-1) Thursday. Kickoff times are 7 p.m.
Last year’s home match between SARFC and the Clan in the Alberta division one fixtures was sullied by two red cards by the Clan for punching and hair pulling late in the penalty-filled 30-10 win by the Edmonton club.
Both SARFC teams were in Grande Prairie last Saturday and the women (3-1) won 31-29 over the Sirens (0-4) on a last-minute penalty try and conversion and the men (1-4) lost 37-34 on a penalty kick by the Centaurs (1-3) to end the match.
In the back and forth affair against the Sirens, SARFC started strong but the Grande Prairie side grabbed the lead late in the match through good pressure and mistakes by the visitors.
Tenacious work by the forwards led to a Cassie Peterson break and she was high-tackled metres from scoring and the penalty try was awarded to knot the score and Nicole Schlemko kicked her third conversion of the match to put SARFC on top.
After the Sirens kicked off, SARFC held the line against a late attack before the whistle blew for full time.
Mackenzie Doughty and McKenzie Pusch scored two tries apiece for last year’s Alberta division one semifinalists.
The St. Albert Impact division 1B men’s and women’s teams are back on the pitch tonight in the Edmonton District Soccer Association after last week’s matches were postponed due to stormy weather.
The Impact women (4-2-3) host the KC Trojans (5-3-1) at 7 p.m. at Riel Park and the Impact men (2-4) line up against the first-place Futballers FC (5-0-1) at 8:15 p.m. at Confederation Park.
Chelsea Fitzgerald and Olivia Orman have combined for 10 of the Impact women’s division-high 25 goals and Fitzgerald’s six goals leads the scoring race.
The junior A St. Albert Miners celebrate Canada Day with a home game against the Calgary Raiders in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
Ball drop is 8 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The Miners are 5-8 and the Raiders, last year’s provincial champions who were based out of Okotoks, are 12-1-1.
The teams meet again Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stu Peppard Arena.
