The 19th annual Fastball St. Albert Invitational Tournament is underway for 42 teams at the Meadowview and Lorne Akins diamonds.

Fastball St. Albert is represented by 12 Angels’ teams in the U10, U12A, U12B, U14A, U14B, U16A, U16B and U18 female divisions and the Falcons in the U12B male division.

Sunday’s finals are 9:45 and 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. at Meadowview.

Fastball St. Albert is also hosting the U16A Western Canadian Softball Championships, July 29 to Aug. 1 at Meadowview.

St. Albert Rugby Football Club teams scrum down against the Pirates in today’s doubleheader at the Edmonton Rugby Union.

Kickoff times are 1 p.m. for the division one women and 3 p.m. for the division three men at the Pirates Rugby Club.

SARFC and the Pirates won their season openers last month in the ERU’s new division one women’s format.

SARFC is 0-2 and the Pirates are 3-0 in the third division men’s table.

Last year SARFC defeated the first-place Pirates 25-12 in the ERU final and beat the Calgary Saracens 40-12 for its first provincial championship in 18 years.

The St. Albert Stars host the Alberta Football League champion Calgary Gators today at Riel Recreation Park.

The Stars kick off their fourth AFL season at 5 p.m.

The Gators won their season-opener 38-0 against the Edmonton Raiders last weekend and the Stars had the bye in the nine-team division.

Last year the Stars finished 6-4 overall after falling 49-35 to the Gators in the semifinals. It was 42-7 at halftime.

The Stars placed seven players on the AFL all-star teams: running back Matt Jarvis, defensive back Adam Nesquick, defensive end Aaron McComish and linebacker Michael Bryski on the first team and defensive back Ron Ackie, linebacker Keith Matchem and defensive back Eric Kyler on the second team.

The next Norwest Midget AAA Baseball League game for the St. Albert Cardinals is Tuesday against the Sherwood Park A’s at 7 p.m. at Centennial Park.

The Cardinals are 12-1 and the A’s are 7-8 in league play.

The first loss for the Cardinals was 6-0 against the Parkland Twins (10-1) this week in Spruce Grove.

The 2015 Tier 1 provincial and U18 Western Canada silver medallists were 15-3-1 overall entering this weekend’s tournament in Langley.
