This year 46 rinks were divided into eight pools – four at Jasper Place and four at Ottewell – and the top three in each pool qualified for the playoffs: first-place finishers in division one, second place in division two and third place in division three.
The Paul Kane Blues are hooping it up at the 34th annual REB Invitational, starting Thursday at Jasper Place High School.
Tip-off times are 12:15 p.m. for the men’s team against the JW North Huskies of Riverside, California and 6 p.m. for the women’s team against the Leboldus Suns of Regina.
Depending on the results, Paul Kane will play the Father Lacombe Lasers of Calgary at 8 p.m. Thursday or either Leboldus or the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams at noon Friday in the 12-team men’s draw and the lady Blues will face the Spruce Grove Panthers or LCI at 2 p.m. or 8 p.m. Friday in the eight-team women’s draw.

Meanwhile, both Paul Kane teams reached Saturday’s consolation finals at the 23rd annual Totem Hoop Classic at Ross Sheppard High School. The lady Blues defeated the Magrath Pandas 81-60 and the Paul Kane men lost 72-60 to the Leduc Tigers.
The lady Blues lost their tournament opener 64-30 to the Jasper Place Rebels, the Totem winners, and in the consolation semifinals edged the Strathcona Lords 57-55.
In the men’s draw, Paul Kane fell 88-48 to McGrath before beating the Lindsay Thurber Raiders of Red Deer 80-54.
