Today’s exhibition between the Bellerose Bulldogs and Paul Kane Blues in high school men’s rugby is the Try Rugby main event at the St. Albert Rugby Football Cup.

However, it was unclear at press time if the Gareth Jones Cup would be awarded to the winning team. The Paul Kane and Bellerose coaches were at odds over when the St. Albert rugby rivals would go toe-to-toe for the coveted trophy. Paul Kane, keeper of the cup, was willing to defend it at Try Rugby but Bellerose wanted to use today’s exhibition for its younger players and newbies to gain more experience. Bellerose was pushing for the May 5 metro Edmonton division two/three pool A confrontation at 6:15 p.m. on the SARFC first pitch as the cup showdown.
The Gareth Jones Cup was first awarded to Bellerose in 2012 at the inaugural St. Albert high schools’ tournament.
Paul Kane is winner of the last two tilts against Bellerose by scores of 31-0 last year at SARFC and 12-11 in 2013 at the Pirates Rugby Club.
Jones, the Godfather of St. Albert rugby, is one of the founding Nervous Nine members of SARFC and the first president.
The St. Albert Impact division 1B women in the Edmonton District Soccer Association play their first match of the season Sunday against the Green & Gold Classics.
Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Foote Field.
The 2015 Impact finished sixth in the 10-team table with six wins, four ties and eight losses and a goals for/against of minus 13.
The Bellerose Bulldogs and Paul Kane Blues kick off their metro Edmonton division one women’s rugby fixtures Tuesday.
The pool A matches start at 4:45 p.m. between Bellerose and Jasper Place Rebels and 6:15 p.m. between Paul Kane and Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
Bellerose and Paul Kane square-off May 10 in the last match before the playoffs.
The top two teams advance to the May 17 semifinals.
Paul Kane is coming off a 3-1 tournament showing last weekend, with 75 points scored and 10 against.
Last year, Bellerose lost the division one final 38-0 to the Bev Facey Falcons, winners of four championships in a row, and drop goals decided Paul Kane’s fate in the division two semifinal setback against the Harry Ainlay Titans.
