Metro Edmonton high school rugby kicks off this week for the men’s teams at Bellerose, Paul Kane and Sturgeon in the division two/three pool A fixtures.
Today at 4:45 p.m., the Bellerose Bulldogs and Memorial Marauders scrum down at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club and the Sturgeon Spirits tackle the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs at Lynn Davies Rugby Park.
The Paul Kane Blues and the Spruce Grove Panthers hook up Thursday at 4:45 p.m. at SARFC.
An exhibition between Paul Kane and Bellerose is also scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday as part of the Try Rugby Day for males and females in grades 4 to 9 at SARFC. The Gareth Jones Cup is expected to be awarded to the winning team.
Last weekend, Paul Kane finished 2-2 against three division one teams and M.E. Lazerte at the Strathcona tournament.
Mike Webb, Mo Munye and Zach Dreger were among several Grade 12 rookies who shone bright. Hooker Diego Guzman and scrumhalf Ethan Simmons also made their mark as the team’s co-captains for the competition and Colin Hinecker, a Grade 10 player, held his own at prop.
Next week in women’s rugby at SARFC, Bellerose plays the Jasper Place Rebels at 4:45 p.m. and Paul Kane lines up against the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds at 6:15 p.m. in the division one pool A women’s fixtures Tuesday.
The St. Albert Drillers run the floor in Friday’s lid-lifter in junior ladies lacrosse.
Game time is 8:30 p.m. against the Capital Region Saints at Bill Hunter Arena.
Monday the Drillers visit the Beaumont Senior Bandits at 9 p.m. at Ken Nichol Arena.
Last year the Drillers finished 3-11 in league play with a goals for/against of minus 76.
The home opener is May 2 against the Sherwood Park Senior Titans at 9 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League’s interlocking schedule for ladies features six junior and four senior teams.
Registrations are free for St. Albert Minor Baseball Association members attending the annual North Central Alberta Baseball League scoring clinic Sept. 30 in Edmonton.
