The men's division 1B pennant race heats up tonight for the St. Albert Impact in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.
Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. against the Liberian Lone Stars (2-7-1) at O’Leary High School.
The Impact (6-4-1), winless in two matches, and Sherwood Park/Karpaty (5-1-4) are tied for second place with two fewer points than Southwest United (6-2-3).
Will Backhouse is among the top scorers with six goals and Alan Smith and Noah Boyko have five apiece.
The St. Albert Tigers host the Confederation Park Cubs in the Sunburst Baseball League Friday.
The first pitch is 7:30 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.
The Tigers are 8-8 and the Cubs are 8-9 in the senior AAA circuit.
Craig Tomas is the Sunburst leader in innings pitched (60) and strikeouts (40) and is second in wins (four).
Jessy Beley ranks first in slugging percentage (.811), is tied for league lead in home runs (four) and is second in batting average (.432) and on-base percentage (.512).
John McHugh shares top spot in doubles (five) and is third in hits (18) and fifth in batting average (.409).
The St. Albert Crude remain winless this season against the Red Deer Rampage after losing twice in the best-of-five junior B Tier I series opener in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League playoffs.
The Crude fell 10-6 and 6-3 to the defending champions last weekend in Red Deer.
The series resumes at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Akinsdale Arena.
If needed, game four is 5 p.m. Saturday in St. Albert and game five is 3 p.m. Sunday in Red Deer.
The winner plays the Manitoba Blizzard (14-6) or Edmonton Warriors (12-8) in the north final.
In league play, the first-place Rampage (14-5-1) beat the fourth-place Crude (8-12) by scores of 7-5, 6-4 and 7-6.
The St. Albert Stars huddle up Saturday against the Lloydminster Vandals in the Alberta Football League.
Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park and admission is $5.
The Stars are 3-2 and the Vandals are 1-4.
Last weekend, the Calgary Gators (6-0) crushed the Stars 53-0 in the Cow Town and the Vandals dropped a 41-13 road decision to the first-year Airdrie Irish (1-5).
The Gators, last year’s AFL finalists and 2013 champions, capped off their first two drives with rushing touchdowns.
The Stars also gave up a pick-six in the loss.
