The west division preliminary round playoff in the Capital Junior B Hockey League started Friday in St. Albert and the score was unavailable at press time.

In the west standings, the Merchants (24-12-2) finished third as winners of five in a row and 10 of their last 12 games and the Flyers (11-23-4) placed sixth.

The Merchants beat the Flyers three times this season by scores of 4-2, 4-3 and 5-3 and lost 5-4 in overtime.

The Merchants averaged 4.87 goals for and 3.66 goals against in league play, compared to 2.76 GF and 4.47 GA for the Flyers.

The Flyers defeated the Merchants in the best-of-five quarter-finals with three wins in St. Albert last year.

The St. Albert Flyers host the Camrose Red Wings in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League Sunday.

Puck drop is 5 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Flyers (15-11-6) are fifth and the Red Wings (7-20-4) are ninth in the north division.

The Flyers are 2-0-1 in February after blanking the Red Wings 7-0 in Camrose last weekend.

The Sutter North Cup playoffs are March 10 to 13 in Leduc and three teams will advance to provincials, March 23 to 27 in Calgary.

The Blues (12-12-5) play the KC Colts (21-4-2) at Mark Messier Arena tonight at 8:30 p.m. The Crusaders (18-8-2) face-off against the Leduc Roughnecks (6-21-1) at Go Auto Arena on Sunday.

The Blues are sixth in the Investors Group division and the Crusaders are first in the Clean Harbors division.

The Blues are 1-2-2 and the Crusaders are 2-3 in the last five games.

The Blues are led by Brett Mossing’s 19 goals in 28 games and Sam Ackerl-Smith’s 31 points in 26 games.

Mattias Neset of the Crusaders is eighth in league scoring with 44 points in 27 games and is tied for seventh in goals with 20.

The league’s regional playoff tournaments are March 1 to 8 for the seven-team Investors Group, hosted by the Southside Athletic Club, and March 3 to 6 for the six-team Clean Harbors, hosted by the Sturgeon Sting.
