The annual OK Tire Men’s Bonspiel sweeps into action Thursday night at the St. Albert Curling Club.
The first draw in the 20-rink competition is 7 p.m.
Sunday’s finals are 11:30 a.m.
Five-time champion Mike Hutchings has a commitment in Spruce Grove this weekend and is unable to defend his crown.
Hutchings beat Warren Sadoway 7-5 in the final of the 24-rink event last year.
The St. Albert Mission AA teams are competing for medals at the 30th annual Wood Tournament this weekend at Terwilliger Community Recreation Centre.
The U19AA belles skate Friday against the LMRL Thunder at 11:45 a.m. and Calgary Red at 7:45 p.m. and Saturday against the Central Alberta Sting at 10:15 a.m. and the Regina Bandits at 2:15 p.m.
The U16AA juniors play Friday against the Sting at 10 a.m. and the Regina Stingers at 5 p.m. and Saturday against the Calgary Blues at 10 a.m. and the Manitoba Magic at 6:30 p.m.
The U14AA tweens are in action Friday against Calgary Blue at 11:30 a.m. and the Sting at 8 p.m. and Saturday against Buffalo Plains Rush at 11:30 a.m. and the Sherwood Park Surge at 5:15 p.m.
Playoffs are Sunday.
The AA tournament features nine U19 teams and 10 U16 and U14 teams.

The St. Albert Merchants and Morinville Jets will pack the stands in Saturday’s junior B tilt at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
Puck drop is 6 p.m. between the fourth-place Merchants (10-6-2) and fifth-place Jets (8-10) in the west division.
The Merchants downed the Jets 6-2 at Akinsdale Arena last month.
The Merchants had won three in a row, including home-ice decisions of 11-2 versus the Spruce Grove Regals (1-13-1) and 4-3 versus the Stony Plain Flyers (6-10-2), before Tuesday’s contest against the Knights (10-7-1) in Sherwood Park. The score was unavailable at press time.
The Jets swept last weekend’s homestand by scores of 5-4 over the Beverly Warriors (11-4-2) and 7-3 over the Leduc Riggers (2-14-2).
Matt Havens of the Merchants is tied for seventh in league scoring with 34 points in 14 games after racking up five goals and two assists against the Regals. He potted his team-high 17th goal against the Flyers.
Tyler Hagel leads the Jets in points with 27 and Brandon Dubuc is the top goal scorer with 15.
