The St. Albert High Skyhawks huddle up today in Peace River against the Pioneers in the Tier III (school population 450 to 749) provincial north semifinals.

Kickoff is 2 p.m. at Glenmary High School.

The No. 7-ranked Skyhawks are 5-4 after losing the Miles division two final 25-8 to the McNally Tigers last Saturday.

The last game for the No. 9-ranked Pioneers was the 29-6 loss to the Sexsmith Sabres, ranked No. 1 in Tier IV (449 or less students), in the Mighty Peace league semifinals Oct. 31.

The winner will travel to play the No. 2-ranked Holy Rosary Raiders (10-0) of Lloydminster or the No. 5-ranked Sylvan Lake Lakers (7-1) in the Nov. 21 final.

The Alberta Bowl championship is Nov. 28 at Foote Field.

The Skyhawks are the metro Edmonton reps in the Tier III provincials for the fourth time in five years. In the north semifinals, they beat the Pioneers 35-14 in 2011 at Peace River and 49-21 in 2012 at St. Albert and last year lost 52-7 to the Whitecourt Cats at Clarke Park.

The only Alberta Bowl appearance for the Skyhawks was the 31-20 loss to the Cochrane Cobras in 2012 at Foote Field.

The St. Albert Riders and Calgary Colts battle for provincial honours today in peewee Tier 2 football.

It’s a noon kick-off at Hellard Field in Calgary.

The Riders lost the Tier 2 final 20-6 to the Okotoks Eagles at Johnny Bright Park to finish 6-4 overall last year.

The Riders are 4-4-1 with eight returning players in the lineup as the repeat winners of the Capital District Minor Football Association championship. The third victory in a row and second playoff triumph was last Saturday’s 30-26 decision against the Edmonton Black Raiders (4-5). A goal-line stand on the last play in the CDMFA final sealed the deal.

The St. Albert Raiders skate on home ice this weekend in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Raiders (2-9-1) play the SEAC Tigers (1-8-3) of Medicine Hat tonight at 6:45 p.m. and the Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-1-6) Sunday at 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Raiders are 2-2-1 in their last five games, including a 3-1 loss in Lethbridge and 6-3 win in Medicine Hat during the last weekend in October.

Ryan Cooper leads the Raiders in scoring with 13 points.
