The St. Albert Lady Raiders host the Edmonton Lightning Wednesday in the Alberta Major Bantam Female Hockey League.

Game time is 7:15 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.

The Lightning (11-3-2) are the top team in the north standings and the Raiders (4-10-3) are fifth out of six teams.

The Raiders are 0-3-1 in January after Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Lloydminster Ice Cats (6-7-3) in a penalty-filled affair at the Border City.

The Ice Cats capitalized twice with the man advantage and early in the third scored shorthanded to make it 3-0.

Hayley Basterash struck on the power play to cut the deficit to 4-1.

Raiders netminders’ Alexis Bruce and Hannah Clark combined to make 37 saves.

Thursday’s opening draw in the Solo Liquor Mixed Bonspiel rocks the ice at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Albert Curling Club.

This year’s theme is Hollywood.

The 32-rink competition wraps up Sunday, with the A, B, C, D and E finals starting at 3:45 p.m.

Dean Darwent, last year’s winner from the Avonair, will not be back to defend his title.

In the final Darwent counted five in the third end, en route to the 8-1 rout of Wilf Gunderson of St. Albert in four ends.

The St. Albert Flyers skate Saturday against the Camrose Vikings in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

Puck drop is 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The Flyers (13-6-6) are chasing the first-place Leduc Oil Kings (19-3-3) for the north pennant and the Vikings (0-21-3) are last in the division.

The Flyers are 2-2-1 in the new year after last weekend’s 2-2 tie against the Sherwood Park Squires in St. Albert and 2-1 loss to the host Spruce Grove PAC Saints (13-7-7).

Ryan Cox and Zach Sherburne notched goals and Josh Dechaine (4-4-2, 2.55 GAA) made 34 saves against the Squires (14-6-5).

Max Salpeter scored and Matt Murray (9-2-3, 2.00 GAA) stopped 37 shots against the Saints (13-7-7).

The St. Albert Slash have three games remaining before the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League playoffs to end a nine-game winless streak.

This weekend the Slash visit the Southeast Tigers (14-7-7) of Medicine Hat in Vauxhall and the Calgary Bruins (8-15-3).

The last game before the playoffs is Feb. 1 against the Peace Country Storm (12-13-3) at 5:15 p.m. at Northstar Hyundai Arena.
