The finals in the SAPEC Invitational Junior High Basketball Tournament rattle the rim today at Vincent J. Maloney School.
Game times are 1 p.m. for the girls and 2:15 p.m. for the boys in the B division and 3:30 p.m. for the girls and 4:45 p.m. for the boys in the A division.
Divisional playoff games are also scheduled at the Sir George Simpson, Lorne Akins and Richard S. Fowler schools.
Thursday’s opening draw determined the A and B playoff brackets for the 16 girls’ and 16 boys’ teams.
Local teams in the tournament include the VJM Marauders, Elmer S. Gish Warriors, ESSMY Leopards, Lorne Akins Gators, Richard S. Fowler Falcons, Sir George Simpson Voyageurs, William D. Cuts Crusaders, Morinville Wolves, Camilla Thunderbirds and Sturgeon Heights Eagles.
Last year VJM swept the A finals, as the lady Marauders three-peated for their fourth banner in seven years.
The St. Albert Flyers host the Sherwood Park Squires tonight in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Faceoff is 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Flyers (13-5-5), Squires (14-6-3) and Spruce Grove PAC Saints (12-7-6) are battling to finish second in the north division behind the Leduc Oil Kings (18-3-3).
The Flyers’ second win in the new year was Tuesday’s 2-1 decision against the SSAC Bulldogs (12-9-3) at Confederation Arena.
Sean Richards’ second goal of the night was the winner with 2:21 to play. Richards is the team’s top scorer with 18 goals and 38 points in 23 games.
Matt Murray (9-1-3, 2.00 GAA) stopped a game-high 27 shots.
Sunday the Flyers visit the Saints at 5:45 p.m.
The St. Albert Raiders skate twice on the road this weekend in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
The Raiders (14-9-3 play the Maple Leafs (8-16-3) today at 2:45 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena and the Lloydminster Bobcats (18-8-2) at 2 p.m.
The Raiders are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games after last weekend’s 4-0 loss to Lloydminster and 5-1 win over the Calgary Northstars (4-22-4) at Akinsdale Arena.
The Raiders are ranked fifth in the north standings and the top six teams make the playoffs.
Meanwhile, netminder Pat Dea is the north division player of the month for December.
Dea (10-3-2) has the highest save percentage in the AMHL at .945 and his 1.91 GAA is fourth-best overall.
