The Merchants and North Edmonton Red Wings hooked up at Londonderry Arena Friday but the score was unavailable at press time.

The Merchants (24-6) were three points up on the Red Wings (21-6-3) in the west standings with a game in hand.

The north division pennant race heats up this weekend for the St. Albert Raiders in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Raiders (15-5-7) travel to Grande Prairie today to play the Storm (11-10-5) at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s showdown against the first-place Canadian Athletic Club (18-6-4) starts at 2:15 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

The second-place Raiders trail the CAC by three points with a game in hand after losing 8-1 to the third-place Lloydminster Bobcats (14-9-3) last weekend in the Border City. It’s the first loss after eight consecutive wins during a 15-game (12-0-3) undefeated streak.

The 29th annual Esso Golden Ring is underway for 15 St. Albert Ringette Association teams in Calgary.

The U10-Step 2 Huskies and Fire Rings, U10-Step 3 Tenacious and Sting, U12A Shock, U12B Slash, U12C Chicks with Sticks, U14AA Mission, U14B Fury and Surge, U16AA Mission, U16B St. Albert and Rage, U19AA Mission and U19B Rage are competing in what is billed as the world’s largest ringette tournament.

Two-time Olympic gold medallist Meaghan Mikkelson is the guest speaker at the Jan. 26 meeting of the Alberta chapter of the Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association.

The St. Albert minor hockey product will discuss the benefits sport massage has provided in her athletic career.

Mikkelson will also share her experiences at the Olympics with the Canadian women’s hockey team and on Amazing Race Canada. Mikkelson and teammate Natalie Spooner finished second on season two of Amazing Race Canada and were voted Canada’s favourite team by fans of the show.

Mikkelson’s presentation goes from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at North Pointe Community Church.
