The Bulldogs and Blues are competing in pool B in the premier boys’ conference.

The rest of the St. Albert and Sturgeon boys’ and girls’ teams play exhibitions before their regular seasons get underway next week.

The St. Albert Raiders start a five-game homestand at Akinsdale Arena this weekend in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.

Saturday the Raiders host the Maple Leafs (3-13-3) at 8 p.m. and Sunday they play the Southside Athletic Club (8-7-4) at 1:15 p.m.

The Raiders are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games and 13-5-2 overall for second place in the north division. Last weekend on the road they lost 3-1 to the Lloydminster Bobcats (8-10-2) and won 5-3 against the Sherwood Park Kings (11-6-2).

The St. Albert Slash skate into the Notre Dame Hounds tournament, riding a five-game undefeated streak in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

In the preliminary round the Slash plays the Westman (Man.) Wildcats on Thursday and the Okanagan Hockey Academy and Weyburn Goldwings on Friday at Wilcox, Sask.

Last weekend the Slash improved to 12-5-3 in league play after posting wins of 5-2 against the Sherwood Park Fury (4-16-2) and 3-1 against the Spruce Grove PAC Saints (5-12-2). Rebecca Wall, Charity Price, Deanna Morin, Kate Lumley and Sabrina Flemming scored in Sherwood Park. Ashley Morin potted a pair and her twin sister, Deanna, also scored against the Saints.

Bryan Mudryk, a TSN broadcaster from Boyle, has been confirmed as the guest speaker for the Jan. 21 awards banquet at the John Reid Memorial Tournament.

The highlight of the night is the presentation of the John Reid Memorial Award for heart and hustle to a St. Albert Sabres player.

The 34th annual invitational tournament is hosted by the Sabres and the St. Albert Raiders. The 16-team draw includes the Wenatchee Jr. Wild of Washington State and the 2010 champion Los Angeles Selects. The Sabres are in the same pool as the Notre Dame Hounds, Los Angeles and Cloverdale Colts.
