Last year there was no men’s bonspiel at the St. Albert Curling Club because of renovations to the front façade.

In 2009 Mike Hutchings repeated as the bonspiel champion. He pocketed $600 in the 22-rink competition.

The St. Albert Slash and Sherwood Park Fury hook up Sunday in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League. Puck drop is 5:45 p.m. at Performance Arena.

Twelve points separate the Slash (9-5-2) and Fury (3-11-2) in the north standings.

The last game for the Slash was Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against the first-place Edmonton Thunder (11-3-2) at Castledowns Arena. The Slash rallied from a 2-0 deficit on goals by Deanna Morin in the first period and captain Eliza Snider’s power-play marker in the second against the 2011 Esso Cup national silver medallists.

The St. Albert Merchants visit the Spruce Grove Regals on Sunday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Grant Fuhr Arena.

Skating into Friday’s home game against the Beverly Warriors, the fourth-place Merchants (9-5-2) trailed the Regals (11-5-1) by three points in the west standings.

The score against Beverly (11-5-1) was unavailable at press time.

Last weekend the Merchants lost 4-3 in Beaumont and beat Leduc 6-3 in St. Albert.

The St. Albert Sabres are in Fort Saskatchewan today to play the winless Rangers in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. Faceoff is 3:30 p.m. at JRC Arena.

The Sabres (8-3-3) are coming off a 4-0 loss to the Sherwood Park Flyers (8-2-2) last weekend in St. Albert. Shots were 28-18 for the visitors.

The next home game is Wednesday against the Canadian Athletic Club (7-4-2) at 7:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The deadline is Jan. 9 to submit applications for the fourth annual John Reid Memorial Scholarship.

Players born between 1990 and 1993 who played bantam AAA in St. Albert are eligible to apply for the $1,000 scholarship.

The winner will be announced during the Jan. 19 opening ceremonies at the John Reid Memorial Tournament. Previous recipients were Justin Kueber, Joshua Maeda and Steven Woolger.

The St. Albert Sabres and the St. Albert Raiders Hockey Club host the 34th annual invitational tournament. The 16-team competition is the premier event of its kind in western Canada.

The 2010 champion was the Kamloops Jardine Blazers.
