In last year’s final the Gators fell in four sets to the Sir George Simpson Voyageurs.

The Crusaders lost last year’s final in four sets to the Gators.

The St. Albert Steel hosts the Lloydminster Bobcats and Fort McMurray Oil Barons this weekend at Performance Arena.

Friday’s faceoff against the Bobcats is 7 p.m. Sunday’s puck drop against the Oil Barons is 2 p.m. After the game fans can skate with the Steel players. Helmets are mandatory.

The Steel improved their Alberta Junior Hockey League home record to 2-7-2 after beating the Drayton Valley Thunder 6-2 Thursday. All-star centre Reed Linaker scored once and added one assist in his first game back after missing 10 with a knee injury. Captain Taylor Fraser and rookie Andrew Gillespie potted two goals apiece and Jamie Johnson also scored. Craig Dworschak had two helpers. Ty Swabb was in net as the Steel were outshot 54-37.

Swabb (3-8-2, 3.74 GAA) was between the pipes in Saturday’s 2-1 road loss against the Bonnyville Pontiacs. Johnson’s fourth goal of the season tied it at one in period two. Shots were 35-23 for Bonnyville.

The Steel were last in the north standings at 5-18-2, prior to Tuesday’s trip to Fort McMurray. The score was unavailable at press time.

The St. Albert Slash and the Edmonton Thunder hook up tonight in the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League. Game time is 8:45 p.m. at Castledowns Arena.

In the north standings the Thunder (11-3-1) and Slash (9-5-1) are ranked first and second, respectively.

Last month the Slash blanked the 2011 Esso Cup silver medallists 2-0.

The Slash is 2-2 in November after splitting two home games last weekend. They beat the Calgary Flyers 4-1 and lost 4-2 to the Calgary Chaos.

Deanna Morin, Noelle Appleby, Sabrina Flemming and Ashley Morin scored against the Flyers (7-6-1). The winning netminder was Emily Mitchell with 22 saves.

A power-play goal by Chaos (10-5) with 1:48 left to play broke a 3-3 tie. Flemming tallied twice in the third. Deanna Morin scored once and netminder Kaelin Klim faced 29 shots.
