The St. Albert Sabres skate again this weekend in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Friday the Sabres (7-8-2) visit the Camrose Vikings (5-6-3) at 7:15 p.m. and Saturday they entertain the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (3-12-2) at 3:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Last weekend the Sabres battled the Lloydminster Heat (18-1-1) to a scoreless draw in St. Albert and lost 4-2 to the hometown Sherwood Park Flyers (10-6-2).
Sabres goalie Chris Curr (2-4-2, 2.91 GAA) stopped a game-high 30 shots Saturday against the Heat for his second shutout and the team’s fourth of the season.
Austin Prior (9-0-1, 1.50 GAA) was tested 18 times, six shots per period by the Sabres, while posting his third shutout.
Sunday the Flyers capitalized three times on the power play and once shorthanded.
Aidan Steinke scored twice in the third period for the visitors.
The Sabres were outshot 39-18 and Nate Reinhart (5-4, 2.46 GAA) was in net.
The loss dropped the Sabres (7-8-2) five points behind the third-place Canadian Athletic Club (10-5-1) in the nitro north division.
Saturday the Morinville Kings host the Rocky Rams in the North Central Hockey League.
Faceoff is 8:30 p.m. at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
The senior AA Kings are tied for first place in the north with the defending champion Devon Barons at 6-2. The Rams are last in the south at 2-6.
The Kings, winners of four in a row, were scheduled to play the Drayton Valley Wildcats, the top team in the south at 7-2, last Saturday but the game was cancelled because of the weather.
Brayden Arcand is the Kings’ top scorer with eight goals and 14 points in seven games. Dalen Paul has eight goals and 12 points in eight games and Adam Tomkow notched 10 points in four games.
Curtis Ronaldson, a junior B graduate of the St. Albert Merchants, is the NCHL’s leading goalie with a 1.18 GAA.
The Metro Edmonton High School Athletic Association basketball season tips off Monday for the Paul Kane Blues at home.
The Jasper Place Rebels play the Blues in the division one season opener at 5 p.m. for the men and 6:30 p.m. for the women.
Division one features 14 men’s and 13 women’s teams, including eight men’s and six women’s teams from the Edmonton public league.
Last season the Blues had losing records in the men’s and women’s premier conference.
