The Paul Kane Blues huddle up today against the Austin O’Brien Crusaders in the Tier II north final.
The metro Edmonton league showdown kicks off at 11:30 a.m. at Clarke Park and admission is $5.
In the Football Alberta rankings the Blues are No. 2 and AOB is No. 10 in Tier II (750 to 1,249 students).
Last weekend in the north semifinals the Blues rallied from deficits of 14-0 and 21-14 in the first half to defeat No. 5-ranked St. Joseph’s Celtics (9-3), the Mighty Peace League finalists, 45-28 in Grande Prairie and AOB beat the unranked Lloydminster Barons 35-7 in the Border City.
The Blues are 10-0 in only the third year of football at Paul Kane High School.
The Miles division two champions are averaging 54.4 points scored and 13.8 against.
AOB, the two-time reigning provincial champion, is 4-4.
In the Carr division one standings AOB finished out of the playoffs on points for and against.
The winner advances to the Alberta Bowl on Friday against the No. 1-ranked Foothills Falcons (11-0) of Okotoks or the No. 3-ranked Catholic Central Cougars (7-1) of Lethbridge. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Hellard Field in Calgary’s Shouldice Park.
The St. Albert Merchants continue their homestand Sunday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Faceoff is 8 p.m. against the Stony Plain Flyers (7-7-1) at Akinsdale Arena.
The Merchants (12-2-1) were the top team in league play as the west division leaders entering Friday’s contest against the Spruce Grove Regals (6-9). The score was unavailable at press time.
The Money Men were also No. 1 in goals for (86) and against (41).
The offensive leaders included Brent McGugan’s 10 goals in 12 games and Casey Reid’s 19 points in 15 games.
Justin Pawlenchuk, the 2012/13 first-team all-star netminder, ranks first in goals-against average at 2.69.
Next weekend the Merchants host the Beverly Warriors (9-6) Friday and Spruce Grove on Sunday at 8 p.m.
The St. Albert Raiders are striving to end a three-game losing streak in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League this weekend in Calgary.
The Raiders (6-6-2) play the Northstars (1-10-3) today at 3:45 p.m. at Max Bell Arena and the Flames (3-8-3) Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.
The Raiders, ranked sixth in the north, are 1-4-1 in their last six games.
