The race to the finish line at the 24th annual Sir George Simpson Triathlon starts at 10 a.m. today at Grosvenor pool.
Last year’s competition featured 126 triathletes and 47 support student course marshals and the race distances were the 150-metre swim, 3.2-kilometre bike and 1.6-km run.
The St. Albert Impact division 1B men’s and women’s teams have matches scheduled tonight in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.
The Impact men (4-2-1) host Red Hill FC (1-3-2) at Riel Park and the Impact women (4-3-1) play the Edmonton Warriors (1-6) at the ESA Complex. Kickoff times are 8:15 p.m.
Noah Boyko is the men’s division’s leading scorer with five goals and Alan Smith and William Backhouse are tied for second with four apiece.
The Impact women are the top defensive team in their division with four goals against but have scored only six in eight matches.
The next premier men’s match for FC Edmonton Academy, listed as the St. Albert Impact in the Edmonton District Soccer Association, is Thursday against the Ital-Canadians/DV Oldboys.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Riel Park.
FC Edmonton Academy is 4-4 and the Ital-Canadians/DV Oldboys are 2-2-4.
The junior A St. Albert Miners run the floor this weekend in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
The Miners (5-9) visit the Sherwood Park Titans (2-10) at 8:30 p.m. Friday. Tthey host the Calgary Mountaineers (10-2-1) at 5:30 p.m. Sturday at Go Auto Arena.
The Miners are 4-0 against the Titans and 1-4 against the provincial champion Mountaineers.
Last weekend in Calgary, the Miners lost 19-8 to the Raiders (9-3-1) and 11-6 to the Mountaineers.
The St. Albert Stars kick off Saturday’s home opener in the Alberta Football League against the Fort McMurray Monarchs at 2 p.m. at Riel Recreation Park.
The Stars and Monarchs share first place with the Calgary Gators at 2-0 in the nine-team standings.
The Stars, last year’s second-best defensive team in league play, have yet to surrender a touchdown after posting wins of 17-3 against the Grande Prairie Drillers (1-1) and 45-3 against the Edmonton Stallions (0-1).
The Monarchs are coming off an 84-0 throttling of the Calgary Wolfpack (0-2) in the Cow Town.
This is the third AFL season for the Stars and last year they finished 3-5 overall after losing 21-1 to the Monarchs in the quarter-finals.
