The tournament, now in its 19th year, honours the memory of Jeremy Richardson, the first Ram to be drafted into the National Lacrosse League in 2003 as the third-round pick (27th overall) by the Calgary Roughnecks.

In August of 2003 the former St. Albert Saints’ hockey standout was diagnosed with stage three malignant melanoma and after a courageous battled passed away Nov. 5, 2005 at age 23.

The Rams renamed their Baggataway tournament in recognition of Richardson’s dedication to lacrosse.

The Edmonton Miners, Richardson’s former junior lacrosse team, dedicated their 2006 season in his memory and retired his No. 23 jersey. The Miners also renamed the team’s offensive player of the year award after the prolific scorer.
