St. Albert teams in metro Edmonton high school football kick off the Carr Conference regular season Thursday.

At 5 p.m. at Clarke Park, the Paul Kane Blues line up against the Salisbury Sabres, last year’s Carr champions and the tier I provincial regional finalist.

The Blues are coming off a 40-0 shutout victory against the Edmonton public league’s M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs in last week’s exhibition in St. Albert.

In a doubleheader at the Riel Park turf field, the St. Albert High Skyhawks play the Archbishop Jordan Scots at 5 p.m. and the Bellerose Bulldogs battle the Bev Facey Falcons at 7:30 p.m.

Game admission is $5.

The St. Albert Merchants make their season debut this weekend at the Fort Saskatchewan tournament.

The Merchants skate Friday against the Strathcona Bruins at 6 p.m., Saturday against the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks at 5:45 p.m. and Sunday against the rival Morinville Jets at 2:15 p.m. All games will be played at JRC Arena.

The Merchants open the Capital Junior B Hockey League schedule Sept. 18 against the Edmonton Mustangs at 8 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.

The home opener is Sept. 23 against Morinville at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

The new head coach of the Merchants is Richard Hebert. He recently coached teams in major midget AAA and minor midget AAA.

St. Albert BMX hosts the 2011 Grand Provincials and Alberta Championships this weekend at the newly rebuilt BMX track at Riel Park.

Race times are 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Age divisions are nine and under, cruiser, 10 to 12, 13-plus and junior/elite.

The track layout includes a supercross-style start hill.

St. Albert BMX is also the home club for Calvin McRea, the Canadian junior men’s champion. At nationals recently in Quebec, McRea finished a close second in the time trials before winning the junior men’s final. He was among 30 racers, from seven to 18 years old, who represented Alberta in the challenge and championship classes at nationals.

Minor Football Day in St. Albert will be celebrated Saturday, with all six St. Albert teams in the Capital District Minor Football Association on display at the Riel Park turf field.

The tripleheader kicks off at 11 a.m. between the Buccaneers (1-1) and Vikings (0-1) in the atom division.

At 12:30 p.m., the Fury (1-0) and 49ers (0-1) huddle up in a bantam tilt.

The last game is the 3 p.m. peewee contest between the Riders (1-0) and Colts (0-1).

Fans are asked to bring a donation to the St. Albert Food Bank.
