The Slash are 2-6-1 after Saturday’s 3-1 win against the Saints (2-2-4) in Spruce Grove.

The Lions Western Canadian Challenge serves up its 19th annual high school volleyball tournament Thursday at 1 p.m. in St. Albert and Morinville.

The venues for the 198-match draw are the Morinville Community, Bellerose Composite and St. Albert Catholic high schools and the Georges H. Primeau and Notre Dame schools in Morinville.

Twenty-four men’s and 24 women’s teams will compete for medals. Local teams are the Bellerose Bulldogs, St. Albert Skyhawks, Sturgeon Spirits and the tournament host Morinville Wolves.

Tournaments of equal size in Canada include the Super Mega Volleyball at Maidstone, Sask., Big Spike at Shaftesbury High School in Winnipeg and Panther Invitational at Spruce Grove.

The Barrhead Gryphons are back to defend their women’s title and a new men’s champion will be crowned with the Edmonton Christian Lions not returning.

The top two finishers in the four men’s and four women’s pools advance to the round of 16. The winners qualify for the quarter-finals and the losers move into the consolation bracket.

The remaining four teams in all the pools will compete for spots in the round of 16 and the consolation side.

Saturday’s playoffs start at 8 a.m. In the medal round, Bellerose hosts the women’s semifinals at 5:30 p.m., the third-place match at 7 p.m. and the final at 8 p.m. Morinville is the site for the men’s semifinals at 5:30 p.m., the third-place match at 7 p.m. and the final at 8 p.m.

The consolation finals are 7 p.m. at St. Albert Catholic for the men and Primeau for the women.

The International Chang-Ho Taekwon-Do Federation of Canada’s 10th annual World Cup is coming to Northstar Hyundai Arena this weekend.

The international event will feature more than 600 competitors performing individual patterns and sparring in all belt levels.

Teams of five black belts will also compete in sparring divisions.

Friday night consists of red and black belt patterns. Saturday’s all-colour belt competitions start at 9 a.m., followed by black-belt individual and team sparring.
