Today’s doubleheader at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club kicks off at 2 p.m. between the second 15 and the Fort McMurray Knights.

St. Albert (5-3) is third and the Knights (4-4) are fifth in the Edmonton Rugby Union’s second division table.

The first victory this year for the seconds was 29-12 against the Knights in Fort McMurray.

The seconds are coming off their first loss after five wins, 41-29 against the Leduc Crude last weekend in Leduc. The Crude haven’t lost a home game since 2008.

The seconds have two games in hand on the Crude (6-4), the division leaders and last year’s Rugby Alberta champions.

At 4 p.m., the first 15 tackle the Strathcona Druids in the Alberta Cup fixtures. In the season opener, the Druids upset the 2010 premier provincial champions 29-17 at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

The firsts (6-3) share second place with the Clansmen (6-3). The Druids (4-4-1) are sixth in the 10-team standings.

The sixth win in a row for the firsts was 26-17 against the fourth-place Calgary Saints (5-2-1) last weekend in Calgary.

Meanwhile, the St. Albert women’s team scrums down against the Pirates today in the second division semifinals. Game time is 2 p.m. at the Pirates Rugby Club. The winner will play the Strathcona Druids 2 (3-1/6-6 overall) or Leduc Crude/West (2-2/4-7 overall) in the Aug. 27 final at Ellerslie.

St. Albert (2-2/2-9 overall) has won two in a row after dropping a 10-7 decision to the Pirates (3-1/4-7 overall) last month.

Tonight at 7 p.m., the St. Albert Heavenly Rollers celebrate the 76th anniversary of the first roller derby event ever staged when they host the Lakeland Lady Killers of Cold Lake at Performance Arena.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the bout starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $10 at www.brownpapertickets.com or $15 at the door. Youths 10 and under get in free.

Roller derby made its debut at the Chicago Coliseum on Aug. 13, 1935. Sports promoter Leo Seltzer was looking for attractions to fill the Coliseum when he created the Transcontinental Roller Derby.

Tonight’s bout is the third at home in the Rollers’ inaugural season. Their record is 1-3 after crushing the Saskatoon Killa Bees 191-48 last month in St. Albert.

The first annual Ladies Member Guest Event at the Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club swings into action Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Club members and their invited guests will play in the 18-hole low gross, low net tournament.

As of Wednesday, 94 golfers had entered.
