A victory Thursday against the Goal Diggers would lift the Morinville Ladies into a first-place tie with Mavericks 09 in the division one table in the St. Albert Women’s Soccer League.
Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Eldorado field.
The two teams play again Sunday at 5 p.m. at Eldorado.
Morinville (11-0-1) has a game in hand on the Mavericks (12-0-1), last year’s pennant winners at 17-1 and fourth-place finishers at tier IV provincials. The Goal Diggers (8-3-1) rank third overall.
Morinville and the Mavericks are coming off lopsided wins on Sunday — 11-2 for Morinville against the Fury (2-10-1) and 11-1 by the Mavericks against Gini’s (3-7).
The leading scorers in the division also hail from both teams. Suzanne Gaetz of Morinville and Natalie Miller of the Mavericks have 22 goals apiece. Next in line with 11 and 10 respectively, is the Morinville duo of Melissa Duro and Amy Suggitt.
The St. Albert Heavenly Rollers host the Lakeland Lady Killers of Cold Lake in roller derby action Saturday at Performance Arena.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the bout starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $10 in advance at www.brownpapertickets.com or $15 at the door. Youths 10 and under get in free.
The third-ever bout at home for the Rollers in their inaugural season coincides with the 76th anniversary of the first derby event staged at the Chicago Coliseum on Aug. 13, 1935.
The Rollers, founded in September 2010, are St. Albert’s first and only roller derby team. Their first win after three losses was last month’s 191-48 thrashing of the Saskatoon Killa Bees.
The fastest finisher at the 2010 St. Albert Triathlon will defend his race title Sunday.
Ryan Kohlenberg of St. Albert is among 157 triathletes who registered online for the sprint individual and team relay (750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and five-km run) and try-a-tri (250m swim, 10-km bike, 2.5-km run).
Kohlenberg’s winning time was 59 minutes and 29 seconds. He was the runner-up in 2009 at 59:35 and the 2008 champion at 1:01:56.
Last year, there were 216 finishers, as well as 34 competitors who completed the try-a-tri.
The triathlon starts at 7 a.m. at Fountain Park Recreation Centre. The St. Albert Roadrunners and Triathlon Club is hosting the Triathlon Alberta-sanctioned race.
This year’s triathlon is dedicated in memory of Frank Hayday. The owner/operator of Karl Hager Limb and Brace for 30 years and member of the Roadrunners club died of mesothelioma on Jan. 21, 2011.
