Thursday’s high school football doubleheader at Riel Recreation Park kicks off at 5 p.m. between the Paul Kane Blues and Ardrossan Bisons with first place on the line in the metro Edmonton league’s Miles conference.
In the Football Alberta rankings the Blues (3-0) are listed fifth in Tier II (750 to 1,249 students) and the Bisons (3-0) are fifth in Tier III (450 to 749 students).
Last week the Blues clobbered the winless Strathcona Lords 80-0, marking the second-straight contest Paul Kane scored 11 touchdowns, and the Bisons posted a 29-7 victory over the McNally Tigers (2-1).
At 7:30 p.m. the Bellerose Bulldogs tackle the winless Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds in the Carr conference.
The Bulldogs, ranked ninth in Tier I (1,250-plus students), are coming off an exciting 22-21 victory over the Bev Facey Falcons (1-2), winners of the last two Carr championships.
Thursday’s gate admission is $5.
The Ken Ann Cup north final between the St. Albert Rugby Football Club and the Clansmen kicks off at 4 p.m. Saturday at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
The winner plays the Calgary Hornets or Calgary Saints in the Labatt’s Cup provincial final Oct. 5 at Ellerslie.
In the Alberta Cup premier men’s table SARFC and the Clan finished with identical 7-5 records, but SARFC had one extra bonus point to secure third spot and a bye into the north final.
SARFC closed out the league fixtures with its fourth straight win and fifth in six matches, a convincing 32-6 decision against the Clan on Sept. 7 at Airway Park. It’s the first win against the Clan after four straight losses, including last year’s 61-15 north final to end a run of five straight trips to provincials by the first 15, starting with the 2007 Alberta Rugby Union second division championship team and then four consecutive first division provincial finals, highlighted by the first Labatt's Cup in club history in 2010.
The annual SAPEC junior high volleyball tournament starts 2 p.m. Friday in St. Albert.
The boys spike the ball at Paul Kane High School and Lorne Akins School and the girls play at Bellerose Composite High School and William D. Cuts School.
The draw features 56 best-of-three matches, with 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams divided into four round robin pools.
The finals are Saturday afternoon.
Last year’s tournament champions included the Sturgeon Heights Eagles for boys and the Cuts Crusaders for girls.
