Thursday at 7 p.m. the second and third division men’s teams battle the Strathcona Druids at the St. Albert Rugby Football Club.

In May the Druids (3-5) posted a 24-17 win over the seconds (4-2) at Ellerslie Rugby Park.

The J.W. Shaw Cup finalists the last three years in the Edmonton Rugby Union are undefeated in four matches. Earlier this month they knocked off the winless Grande Prairie Centaurs 24-15 and 64-5 in a home-and-home series.

The thirds (3-4) are also seeking revenge after losing their season opener 13-8 to the Druids (5-1-1). The thirds recently swept Grande Prairie (4-4) by scores of 6-5 and 17-10. Their match Friday against the Lep/Tigers (2-6) at Ellerslie was rained out.

Online entries are being accepted for the St. Albert Triathlon on Aug. 14.

As of Monday, 74 triathletes had registered for the sprint individual and team relay (750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and five-km run) and try-a-tri (250m swim, 10-km bike, 2.5 km run). Online registrations close Aug. 7.

Visit www.eventsonline.ca/events or www.starrt.com for more information.

Last year there were 216 finishers, plus another 34 who completed the try-a-tri. The fastest male and female was Ryan Kohlenberg (59:29) and Lisa Graham (1:07:34 for 10th place overall). The St. Albert duo was also the 2008 winners.

This year’s triathlon is dedicated in memory of Frank Hayday. The owner/operator of Karl Hager Limb & Brace for 30 years died of mesothelioma on Jan. 21, 2011. His triathlon career started in 2001 at age 56. The next year the St. Albert Roadrunners and Triathlon Club member represented Canada at the world age group championships in Cancun. He also qualified for worlds at New Zealand in 2003 and Madeira in 2004 but didn’t participate because of an injury. He qualified again in 2005 and raced in Hawaii.

St. Albert’s reigning premier men’s provincial rugby champions extended their winning streak to five matches in Saturday’s 34-8 pounding of the Calgary Irish (4-4) in Calgary.

After kicking off the Alberta Cup fixtures with three losses, the first 15 have outscored opposing teams 217-42 in their last five wins. They are now tied for third place in the standings with the Clansmen (5-3).

The firsts are back on the pitch Aug. 6 against the Calgary Saints (5-1-1) at 3:30 p.m. at Calgary Rugby Park.

After the Saints the firsts have three matches remaining, including two home dates leading up to the Sept. 17 quarter-final playoffs.
