The playoff finals in the St. Albert Men’s Soccer League kick off Sunday at the Victoria Soccer Club.
The third-place match at 1 p.m. features Arsenal (6-8-3) and SA City (5-12).
The 3 p.m. playoff cup tilt between GSE (10-3-2) and the Rummies (13-0-2) is a rematch of last year’s final, a 1-0 GSE win for its first championship in the team’s second SAMSL campaign.
In the season series the Rummies won 2-0 in May and the teams settled for a 1-1 draw in July.
Both teams are coming off 5-1 semifinal wins last weekend. The Rummies defeated SA City in a match marred by four red cards, including three to the Rummies, and GSE beat Arsenal.
Sunday’s division one final between Mavericks 09 and SA Force starts at 5 p.m. at Forest Park field.
The Mavericks, last year’s playoff cup winners, are 15-1 in league play and 16-2-2 overall as the fourth-place finishers at Tier III provincials.
The only loss before provincials was 3-2 against the Force on Aug. 13.
Suzanne Schulz led the Mavericks in scoring with 16 goals for second place in the division one Golden Boot scoring race.
Jen Bruinsma struck 10 times in league play, three times at provincials and potted a pair in last weekend’s 5-1 semifinal win over the Lady Titans.
The third-place Force are 12-4-1 overall after knocking off the second-place Morinville Ladies, the 2012 playoff finalists, 4-2 in the semifinals.
Two of the team’s four losses were 1-0 and 4-2 against the Mavericks.
Last year the Force was 16-0-1 as the division two pennant winners and playoff champions. Angie Mason of the Force racked up 33 goals to win the Golden Boot Award.
Sunday the St. Albert Merchants host the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks at 7:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena in the last exhibition before the puck drops in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
The Merchants are 4-0 in pre-season play.
Last weekend at the Morinville Jets’ tournament at the Ray McDonald Sports Center the Merchants posted wins of 4-1 against the Wetaskiwin Icemen, 7-4 against the Stony Plain Flyers and 4-2 against the Jets.
The Merchants also doubled the Spruce Grove Regals 6-3 at home Sunday.
League play starts Friday, when the Merchants and Jets renew their rivalry at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale.
Last season the Merchants came up one win short of going to the Founders Cup league final and provincials.
